Born the youngest of James Francis Doherty II and Lila Mary Keating's 10 children, Rose grew up with her siblings and Keating cousins at 68 1/2 Oxford Road in New Hartford, NY until the family moved to 638 Rutger Street in Utica, NY in 1964.
Rose graduated from Utica Catholic Academy in 1969, and completed her associates degree at Mohawk Valley Community College in 1989.
During her life, Rose had a number of callings and vocations throughout her career. For many years, Rose found great satisfaction working in the admissions department of St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica, NY, where she provided administrative support to patients arriving at the hospital.
After a lifetime of winters in central New York, Rose ventured out to live in a warmer climate. After her son graduated from high school in 1989, she moved with her two daughters to Northern California, and began working at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
Rose found her next calling as the administrative coordinator for child care services with the YWCA of Sonoma County, where she worked for several years providing vital services to low-income families and at-risk children.
Rose was drawn to the hospitality industry after planning numerous Doherty Family Reunion vacations for her extended family. Rose loved meeting new people from all over the world and giving them their dream vacations. Rose completed a certificate in hospitality operations and found a great sense of pride working her way up from front desk agent to front office manager at high-end hotels throughout Sonoma County.
Rose's hospitality experience was a valuable asset in her work as a marketing coordinator at Brookdale Hoffman Estates in Illinois, where she helped seniors transition into assisted living, and planned events for the vibrant community.
In retirement, Rose was an active member of the Redondo Beach community as a volunteer gardener at local schools within the Redondo Beach Unified School District, and was a lead team member for Moms Demand Action, continuing her lifelong commitment to nonviolence. Rose enjoyed spending time with her family, taking frequent beach walks, gardening, painting, reading, capturing images of flowers, and participating in community potlucks.
Rose is preceded in death by her parents James Francis Doherty II, Lila Mary Doherty, her infant son Mark, siblings Edmund, Richard, Kathryn, Mary, James Francis III, in-laws Jon Cook, John L. Wallace, and Suzanne Doherty.
Rose is survived by her children James Frazier Jr. (Tonya), Lila Hofmann (Ben), Sarah Doherty (Taylor), beloved granddaughter Winifred, siblings Frank, Bill, Joe (Christine), Mike (Patti) and her loving extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and dear friends.
A Celebration of Life will take place on July 27th, 2024 in Redondo Beach, California. Please email [email protected] for more information.
