Oliver is survived by his wife of 46 years, Karen (Gilmour) Shultz; his son, Erick C. Shultz of Bothell, Washington; his brothers, Richard Shultz of Strasburg, Pennsylvania and Jerry Shultz of Bellingham, Washington; and a sister, Darcie Shultz-Frisch of Wenatchee, Washington.
Born in Seattle, he was raised by his parents Harold and Shirley (Morey). Oliver spent his youth in Orville and Redmond (Washington), and lived his adult life in Bothell.
In his early years, Oliver had a paper route, worked in a bakery, and edited ads for a local newspaper. After graduating from Lake Washington High School in 1963, he served in the United States Air Force for six years, where he trained and successfully serviced jet engines. He rose to the rank of Technical Sergeant and remained in the Air Force Reserve, serving his country for a total of 37 years.
Oliver’s substantial Air Force training landed him a position as a die cutter at Union Die and Cutting. He continued this trade at Boudwin Carton before opening his own die cutting business. After ten successful years Oliver sold the business and subsequently accepted a position as jet engine mechanic by the United States Air Force, and later, as an inspector for The Boeing Corporation where he checked and verified the structural safety of airframes.
Oliver volunteered for many years in Rotary Club of Edmonds, the Boy Scouts of America, and Kiwanis International. In his work with the Boy Scouts, he taught how to build igloos, general survival skills, and cooking over open fires; specifically with Dutch ovens. From there his passion for cooking and baking grew into a hobby that he enjoyed the rest of his life. Oliver’s other passions included cars and rebuilding engines. He also loved his dogs; his most recent, a Chocolate Labrador named Skipper, was by his side at the time of his death.
A memorial celebrating Oliver’s life will be held at Hollywood School House (14810 NE 145th Street, Woodinville, WA 98072), Saturday, January 9, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
