Born on September 27th, 1928, in Seattle, WA, to Jay and Agnes Johnston, Joanne lived a life full of devotion, grace, and quiet strength. She was recently preceded in death by her beloved husband of 71 years, Edgar.
Joanne is lovingly remembered by her children: Paula Egbert (Scott), Jay Monroe (Maggie), Julie Okita (Brent), Chris Holbrook (the late Mike), and Patty Monroe (John Ciszewski); her 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind extended family and countless dear friends whose lives she touched with kindness and warmth.
Joanne’s early years were spent in Seattle, where she attended Forest Ridge and Holy Names Academy. She later graduated from Seattle University as a Registered Nurse, where she met her husband, Ed. Her compassion and gentle spirit made her a natural caregiver—qualities she brought to her nursing work at Overlake Hospital and through decades of heartfelt volunteer service.
She gave generously of her time and energy, supporting the community through her work with Holy Family Catholic Church, Lake Washington schools, Norkirk neighborhood, and hospital volunteering. She was well known on Lake Washington Blvd for her daily walks with her cherished friends. Despite her many commitments, Joanne’s greatest devotion was to her family. As the matriarch of our family, she will be greatly missed.
A funeral service to celebrate Joanne and Edgar’s life will be held on May 5th, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, Kirkland, WA. All who knew and loved them are welcome.
