Carl grew up Fulton surrounded by his family, including his grandmother. He spent his time going to school, and then coming home to work hard doing the farm chores. His love of music was born on the farm, as well; this is where he learned to play the piano.
Soon after Carl's 18th birthday, he joined the Army and served overseas in New Guinea, Australia, and the Philippines. During the war, Massey served in the Army on Goodenough Island near Papua New Guinea, Australia, and the Philippines. Throughout his service, he did everything from driving a truck to being in communications as part of a field artillery unit that was under General Douglas MacArthur’s command. He had his basic training at Camp Roberts new San Miguel, California.
Carl's love of music is legendary. He was self-taught with no formal training but had an ear for music. He learned to play the guitar during his time in the Army. He loved 'Hillbilly' music, Johnny Cash, Ernest Tubb, and so many more artists. He wrote a song called Kick-Stomp-Beat and made it into a record. He even had the chance to play with Grover Duke.
Carl is survived by his children Marlene Zilch, Donna (Fred) Henefin, Mary Lou (Allen) Miller, Michael Massey, and Russell (Faith) Massey. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren and 2 Great-Great-Grandchildren. He is proceeded in death by his wife Betty Lou, and his son Carl, Jr. He is also proceeded in death by his sisters Vivian, Helen, Elma, and Mary, and his brother Jackie, who passed away when he was four.
The love Carl had for his family was unending. His family was everything to him. He loved each and every one of his family members unconditionally and he was always there for them. Carl always had a bear hug that would almost break you in half; He didn't know any other kind of hugs!
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.CedarLawns-Washington.com for the Massey family.
