Zofia Leszczynska Slowik was born in Jackson, Michigan on May 29, 1922 to Jozef and Magdalena Leszczynski. Zofia passed away peacefully in her Detroit, Michigan home on September 17, 2023 with her son Steven by her side.
Zofia was the beloved wife of the late Francis Joseph Slowik who passed away September 15, 1976. Loving mother of MaryAnn DeBusschere (Gerard), Nadine Slowik (Brian Fekete), Sharon Slowik (John Carson), and Steven Leszczynski Slowik.
Dear Grandmother "Busia" of Marc DeBusschere (Jennifer). Great grandmother of Livia DeBusschere.
Known among family as “Auntie Sophie”, her generous spirit and positive outlook on life was an inspiration. She saw the brighter side of life for which she was always grateful. She was adept at the art of listening, constantly lending an ear and offering compassionate advice to family and friends.
She loved a variety of activities; everything from fishing and mushroom hunting to dancing. She was a great cook and made family favorite Polish dishes such as stuffed cabbage, kuzanek, and pierogi. Zofia was an avid gardener and was especially proud of her home-grown tomatoes. She practiced organic gardening early on and strongly believed in the health benefits of home-grown vegetables.
Zofia looked for common ground with people, especially if it involved fun. Much like a child who skips along a path to add a bit of pleasure, Steven and Zofia would add a dance step or two as part of her daily routine.
Zofia's life will be celebrated during her favorite month of May in 2024. Details will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Zofia's honor to the Rodale Institute, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization devoted to regenerative organic gardening. rodaleinstitute.org
