Mary Evelyn Porosky of Redford, MI passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at the age of 69. She was born on October 1, 1953, in Detroit, MI where she grew up with nine siblings. Despite her large family, Mary always made time for everyone. She always provided support, words of advice, a listening ear, kindness and love for her son and family.
Mary graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy with a degree in education and entered a teaching career that spanned over 40 years. It takes a very special person to become a teacher, and Mary was certainly no exception. To say she had a passion for knowledge and that she loved what she did would be an understatement. Helping young people discover their own passion for learning, especially math, was her true joy during her career and it was contagious. Mary was talked about so highly by her colleagues and friends for her devotion to learning, her patience and her kindness. She was known as “my favorite teacher” by many of her former students, several of whom even went on to teach math themselves.
Mary was a loving mother and sister. She enjoyed spending time with family, cooking and preparing meals every Sunday and especially over the holidays. All were always welcome at her home. She loved gardening, planting flowers and vegetables, and working outside in her yard. Mary especially loved being a new grandmother to her granddaughter, Sutton. Her eyes would light up and she would get the biggest smile whenever Sutton came to visit or when she looked at her pictures.
Mary is survived by her son, Stephen Porosky, and his wife and daughter: Lindsay and Sutton. As well as, loving sisters; Carol (Bob) Votruba, Dorothy Boyd, Susan Bering, Cathy Dougherty, Patricia Pagels, Barbara Eisterhold, and brother John (Debbie) Dougherty along with several nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Beatrice and Lyle, and brothers Ralph and Joseph.
The family of Mary Porosky would like to express our deepest appreciation for everyone’s sympathy as we mourn her loss. The shared memories, messages, phone calls, support and kind words mean a great deal to us all. We would like to also thank Mary’s nurses, with Elara Caring hospice, for the care and compassion they showed her through her final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service celebrating Mary’s life at Harry J. Will Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at 11:00am. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00am.
Her son asks that in lieu of flowers, to please consider donating to The Glioblastoma Foundation in Mary’s honor.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.HarryjWillRedford.com for the Porosky family.
