Sally Spear Wells passed away peacefully surrounded by family on her favorite holiday, Thanksgiving, November 24, 2022. In her words, “The love of family is the greatest joy in life.” Her children, Matthew Spear Wells and Lara Wells Osborn (Toby) and her grandchildren, Lexi, Abbi, Triston and Margot, and the friends that she “chose” as family, were the center of her world. Sally was born August 21, 1940, in Los Angeles, the only child of Charles and Kimi Spear. She graduated with a BS from UCLA, worked as an export commodity trader in San Francisco and moved to Redding in 1965 with her then husband, Mike Wells. Sally was a cutting-edge business entrepreneur teaching software instruction and co-owner of Computerland in the 1980s and was later owner of The Yogurt and Coffee Place. Sally was a trailblazer, such a strong, intelligent, energetic, and generous woman and her list of accomplishments and community engagement is long. She was the first woman President of Riverview Golf and Country Club, President of the Women’s Golf Association of Northern California, Director of Redding Chamber of Commerce, Director of Shasta Arts Council, Director of Haven Humane Society, Board member of the Shasta Library Foundation, Board of Regents of the North State Symphony, served on Shasta County Grand Jury, supporter of Turtle Bay, Riverfront Playhouse, and the North State Symphony League. She was recognized as a Shan Fellow in 2013 by Redding Rotary, she was the 2014 Woman of Achievement for AAUW and in 2016 she received the Redding Mayor’s Philanthropic Achievement Award. In the last years Sally suffered from Lewy Body Dementia but never lost the ability to be a fabulous storyteller, strong character and become loved by all those around her. Sally is forever in our hearts and will be greatly missed.
