On April 30, 2016, surrounded by family, Pat very peacefully went home to heaven. Recently, when Pat was asked what is most important in her life, she said, "Having faith in Christ is paramount. He has guided us in all decisions, and He has been our light in this sometimes very dark world." She went on to say, "Having close family relationships is tremendously important to me. My children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are dear to me beyond measure."
Pat Cargile was born September 28, 1924 in West Palm Beach, Florida, to Horace and Virginia Darr (Kelly) Raulerson. Also, she is the great-granddaughter of Andrew Van Buren Kelly and Parthenia Burns. These Kelly's of Cumberland and Moore Counties, North Carolina are descendants from the Daniel Kelly Family that are from the Isle of Skye, Scotland and came to America in 1803.
Andrew and his wife Parthenia raised their family of eleven children in Carthage, Moore Co., North Carolina. In 1910, their sons, (Pat's great uncles), Duncan Ray Kelly, and Augustus Hiram Kelly built their home on Old Plank Rd, now Ft. Bragg Rd in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
This home is now called 'The Hilltop House.' It is a five star fine dining restaurant located in the historic Haymount district of Fayetteville. It has a rich and varied history. Over time, many changes have been made, but the house is essentially the same building that has stood for almost 100 years. Pat spent many happy hours there playing with her North Carolina cousins.
Pat's father was a bridge tender and her mother was a secretary for the Florida State Arsenal in St. Augustine, FL. Pat lived with her family in West Palm Beach until about 1930. Then, the family moved to St. Augustine, Florida and resided there for many years. She graduated from Ketterlinus High School in St Augustine, FL. During this time, when she was on an outing with her church group, she met Arch Cargile. Pat married the handsome young man on November 5, 1942 in the Naval Chapel in Corpus Christi, Texas. Since this was the beginning of World War II, and Arch was stationed overseas, Pat returned home to St. Augustine from Texas. It was there that their first child, Sallie, was born. When Arch returned from overseas he worked at the Navy Electronics Laboratory in San Diego. At this point in time the family grew to four children, (Sallie, Douglas, Lynne, & Denise) and lived in La Mesa, California. Pat and Arch, attended and joined First Baptist Church in La Mesa, with Ed Epps as their pastor
Because a better position was offered Arch at Pt. Mugu the family relocated to Oxnard, CA, in January 1957, then to Oak View, CA, in August 1964. While in Oak View they attended Ojai Community Church.
In September 1987, Pat and Archie moved to Anderson, CA, from Oak View/Ojai and built the Early American home Pat had always dreamed about on Flowers Lane.
While in Anderson, Pat and Arch attended Cloverdale Community Church in Anderson, CA. There she helped Arch teach the Senior Adult Sunday school class.
She loved roses, flowers and trees and she loved to garden. She knew many of the Latin names for all the plants in her yard. When she lived in Anderson, she had 150 rose bushes! In addition she and Arch belonged to the Shasta County Rose Society in Redding, CA and Pat won many awards for her roses.
She also liked to cook, sew and made many porcelain dolls. Pat loved to read and was an avid reader of historical novels and murder mysteries and other interesting books.
Late October 2009, Arch had open heart surgery. Subsequently, Pat and Archie sold their home on Brehaven and moved to the Vistas, an exclusive assisted living complex in Redding. In November of 2012, Arch and Pat celebrated 70 years of married life together.
Patricia is preceded in death by her husband Arch Cargile, of Redding, CA. She is survived by her four children. They are her daughters Mrs. Phil (Sallie) Harris and Mrs. Jim (Denise) Henry of Redding, his daughter Mrs. Kent (Lynne) Klocke of Anderson and son Douglas Cargile of Pt. Orford, Oregon. She has 10 grandchildren, 16 great grand children and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
She will be very missed by all who loved her. But, she is with her heavenly father, Arch and a myriad of friends.
The Memorial Service is at McDonald's Chapel, 1275 Continental St., Redding, at 1:00pm and graveside service is at 2:00pm on Saturday, May 7th.
