Martin Burrell was born on September 7, 1935 in Demaine,Saskatchewan, Canada as one of eight children to Martin and Dorothy Burrell.
He came to the US in 1945 and became a citizen in 1953. Martin attended El Monte High School, Chapman College for B.A. and Chico State for his masters. He married Dianne Wiliams in 1956 in North Hollywood where he taught at Whittier for 8 years. They moved to Redding in 1967 when Nova High opened and he taught as Social Studies Chairman for 23 years.
He was involved in First Christian Church as an Elder, Board and Choir member, building construction, YMCA Men's Club & Indian Guides, Farm League Ball, People of Progress, Riverfront Playhouse Boards, Redding Swim Club, City Planning Commission, Habitat for Humanity Director, Cascade Theater usher and many other community organizations.
He enjoyed golfing with good friends and traveling with Dianne in their 1954 converted Greyhound Bus. He was always ready to say a "vigorous yes" whenever asked for help on any project. His family and church were very dear to his heart. He was a true steward of God.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years; sons, Dave (Andrea) Burrell, Dan (Robbin) Burrell; daughter, Deanna (Russ) Voorhees; grandkids: Amy, Kari, Kira, Alex, Ryan, Evan, Megan and Noah; great-grandkids: Kelsey, Eli, Jeremiah, Eliza and Abigail; sisters, Virginia Fiske, Elaine Byerley, Nina (Dick) Uber and Lori Williams.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bruce and Perry and sister, Dorothy Elwell.
Services will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at First United Methodist Church on E. St. Redding, Ca. 96001 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Christian Church building fund, People of Progress or Riverfront Playhouse.
