To us she was Mom, Grandma, Grammy. To friends she was Jo, and to Tommy, her late husband of 47 years, she was "Sweetheart".Josie May Kane was born July 26, 1924 in Anderson to a Shasta County pioneer family. Her grandparents (Phillips/Hackler) homesteaded land near Whitmore in the 1800's. She attended school in Anderson and graduated from Anderson High School where she was active in many clubs and was a member of the California Scholarship Federation.
Josie married her high school sweetheart, Thomas A. Vaughan Jr., in 1943 and together they spent 47 happy years filled with family, golf, travel, music, dancing and an on-going game of Gin. She was an excellent cook and passed that joy of cooking to all her children and grandchildren. Her yard and houseplants thrived under her care and she was particularly proud of her roses and native plant garden. Music was a major part of Josie's life. She sang and played piano at an early age with recitals and performances while in school. Later, get-togethers with family and friends almost always centered around Mom on the piano with old friends Henry Rother and Craig Williams on banjo and saxophone. And even toward the end of her life, she played piano for her fellow residents at The Vistas.
Josie was generous, caring and compassionate and loved her family above all else. We appreciate all she did for us over the years and will miss her greatly.
She is survived by daughter Linda Frisbie and her husband Ray of Whitmore, son Mark Vaughan and his wife Eva of Anderson, granddaughters Lena Buchholz of Shasta Lake, Maya Frisbie of Redding and Emily Vaughan of Medford, Oregon, great grandson Bryce of Redding and sister Eunice Lutkemeier of Redding. She was preceded in death by husband Tommy and daughter Cathy.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Josie's name may be made to Haven Humane Society.
