Eugene "Gene" L. Bui, 74 was born in Redding, California on September 5, 1936. He was the son of Elmer and Marguerite Nixon. Gene grew up in Redding, California with his two brothers, John and Norman Nixon.
Gene graduated from Shasta High and Shasta College. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Chico State.
Gene was blessed with two children and two step-children, one daughter, Bettina Cagwin and her husband Travis, one son, David Bui and his wife Cheryl, two step-sons, Patrick and Gregory Johnson. Another blessing for Gene was the gift of three grandchildren, Matthew Bui, Wyatt Bui and Tanner Cagwin.
Gene enjoyed what he did for a living. Showing a strong work ethic, Gene worked diligently and did his best to succeed in his career. He was employed as a probation officer in Oregon and California for over 40 years.
Gene enjoyed his leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. His favorite past times included parading his 1929 fire truck, collecting model fire trucks, playing his trumpet (he was in the Second Time Around marching band), working with kids and dancing with his wife.
Throughout his life, Gene was a doer and was always actively involved in professional and community organizations. Throughout his later years, Gene was an active member of the Elks, Moose, Lions and Knights of Columbus. He also helped create the Teen Center in Redding, California. He took an active role in his community, serving on committees for the Shasta Union High School District and Retired Senior Volunteer program.
Though he never set out to gain individual recognition, Gene was given accolades for his many and varied accomplishments throughout his life. His most prestigious award was Man of the Year in Redding in the 1960's.
Gene passed away on October 20, 2010 in Redding, California. He is survived by his wife of eleven years, Madelaine Bui; his daughter Bettina Cagwin and her husband Travis; son David Bui and his wife Cheryl; step-sons Patrick and Gregory Johnson; grandchildren Matthew and Wyatt Bui and Tanner Cagwin; and his brother John T. Nixon. Gene is preceded in death by his mother Marguerite Bui-Nixon; step-father Elmer Nixon; and his brother Norman Nixon.
Simply stated, Gene was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by his family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Gene leaves behind him a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life he touched will always remember Eugene L. Bui.
A memorial service will be held in Gene's honor on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Lawncrest Chapel, 1522 E. Cypress Ave. Redding, CA 96002. Arrangements are in the care of Lawncrest Chapel (530-222-1587).
