Esther Harter, 94, passed away on February 20, 2018 at Oakmont Assisted Living in Redding California Esther resided in Redding most of her life. Esther was born to Catherine & Dennis Gery from Austria on September 13, 1923. Esther lived in Inwood during her early years with her family. She had 2 sisters Brunetta Smith & Gloria Gery.
Esther graduated from Anderson High School in 1942. Esther met her love; Clayton Harter from Slatington, PA during the War at a USO dance. They were married October 8, 1946 and were married for 67 years. They were blessed with 3 children-Pamela, Dennis & Jeffrey. Our parents were loving & gave us everything they didn't have. They were proud that all their children were college educated.
Esther & Clay owned a Floor Covering business for almost 30 years. They both worked very hard. Esther & Clay enjoyed RV traveling with friends. They also enjoyed spending time at their summer home in Old Station. An unfortunate accident on May I8, 1995 changed both of their lives. Esther was always there giving Clay loving support
Esther was very active in many organizations & held several different offices. She was a people person & liked being involved. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for 63 years. Also a charter member of 39 years & treasurer of the Emblem Club. Esther was a member of Mercy Guild for 42 years with volunteering 44,000 hours at Mercy Hospital. Also a lifetime member of Young Ladies Institute & the Altar Society. During the time the children attended St Joseph School Esther was A Room Mother, Hot Dog & Hamburger lady. She was a long time member of St Joseph Catholic Church. Esther will be greatly missed by her family & friends.
Esther is survived by her children - Pamela Harlow (Gary) of Redding, Dennis Harter (Ann) of Santa Rosa & Jeffrey Harter (Tanya) of Chico and Grandchildren Christine Allen (Trey) of Fresno, Scott Harlow (Yvonne) of Cottonwood, Colin Harter (Laura) of Orinda, Brady Harter (Francesca) of Redwood City, Darren Harter of New York City, Melissa Harter of Chico, Jeremy Harter (Katelyn) of El Cerrito, Jenna Harter of Chico and Great Grandchildren Logan Allen of Riverside, Hunter & Brock Allen of Fresno, Douglas Harlow of New York City, Charlotte, Addison, & Lucy Ann Harter of Orinda Gianna & Luca Harter of Redwood City and a dear Niece Janice Condry (Gary) of Niles, ML.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 am Saturday, March 3, 2013 at St Joseph Catholic Church. Burial 2040 Walnut Ave. Redding with Father John Lawrence officiating. Burial will follow at St Joseph Cemetery 4075 Eureka Way, Redding. Reception at the Redding Elks Lodge at 1 pm. 250 Elk Drive, Redding.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be sent to the charity of your choice or Hospice. We would like to thank Oakmont for their loving care of Esther & also Hospice for being there for her. We would like to thank those for their visits & cards.
