Gerald "Jerry" Charles Young, 84, of Exeter Township entered eternal rest on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. Born in Reading, PA on January 16, 1940, he was a son to the late Margaret (Keiser) Young and Harry W. Young.
With a career spanning over 38 years, Jerry was a dedicated machinist at Textile, now Rockwell, where his commitment to his work was unparalleled.
Jerry was a faithful parishioner of St. Catherine of Sienna parish. For many years, he dedicated his time to coaching the 8-12 year old City County Colt Baseball League. Later, he assumed the role of president, demonstrating his commitment to youth development through sports.
Jerry was also known for his unwavering passion for Star Trek. As the unofficial president of the Berks County chapter of the Star Trek fan club, he found camaraderie and shared enthusiasm among fellow fans. In his spare time, Jerry enjoyed casting a line on a fishing trip or teeing off on the green. He was a devoted Philadelphia sports fan and cheered them on through their victories and defeats. A true aficionado of Philly cheesesteaks, he was always in search of the perfect combination of meat, cheese, and bread. He also had a knack for storytelling, weaving tales with such vivid detail and embellishment that listeners couldn't help but be captivated.
Jerry was the epitome of a gentleman, embodying patience, kindness, and unwavering support for those around him. One of Jerry's most remarkable qualities was his endless capacity for understanding and forgiveness. No matter how badly one might have stumbled or erred, Jerry was always there with a listening ear and a reassuring word, offering encouragement without judgment or hesitation. He will be missed by all who were blessed enough to have known him.

Jerry's spirit will be carried on by his wife, Suzanne Marie (Spanier) Young; his 3 sons Steven Young and his wife Pamela, of Reading, Daniel Young and his wife Malissa, of West Lawn, Paul Young and his wife Christine, of Elizabethtown; 2 daughters Lori Edwards and her husband John, of Philadelphia; and Sara Young, of Lincoln Park. Gerry also leaves behind 11 grandchildren Danielle, Doreen, Sean, Hayden, Carter, Zachary, Catherine, Andrew, Kaleb, Jennifer and Amanda; and a host of great grandchildren to cherish his memory.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his 4 siblings Joan Essick, Jack, Ronald and Raymond Young.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at St. Catherine of Siena Chapel, 2425 Perkiomen Ave., Reading, PA 19606. Mass of christian burial will promptly commence in the chapel at 10:30 AM, with Fr. Brian Miller officiating. Graveside committal will immediately follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park, 390 W. Neversink Rd., Reiffton.
