Gene Gerald Hassler, 83, of Douglassville, PA passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2024. Born in Reading, PA on December 8, 1940, he was a son to the late Daniel Adam Hassler and Madeline Emma (Walters) Hassler. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his 5 siblings Robert R. Hassler, Thomas James Hassler, Richard C. Miller, Patricia A. Lerch and Laura Mae Stapleton and his companion of 23 years Victoria Guinther.
His spirit will be carried on by his son Mark A. Hassler and his wife Holly L.; 2 daughters Karen M. Hassler and Kathleen M. Hertzog and her husband Jeffrey L.; sister Mary Lou Durant and 2 brothers Donald D. Hassler and Larry L. Hassler. Gene also leaves behind 7 grandchildren Amber L. Alexander, Thomas V. Alexander (Jessica), Ronald G. Seidel, Christopher A. Hassler, Leanna L. Hassler, David M. Hassler (Morgan), Elizabeth K. Hassler; 4 great grandchildren Devan M. Hadvab, Cavan J. Hadvab, Jackson M. Hassler and Rowan K. Hassler and a host of nieces and nephews too cherish his memory.
Gene dedicated 40 years at Polymer Corp., where he served as a supervisor until his retirement in 2002. Beyond his primary role, Gene extended his expertise as the President of the Polymer Sunshine Club and as a loan officer for the Polymer Credit Union, fostering financial well-being within the Polymer community.
Gene was a faithful parishioner of Hope Lutheran Church - Reading, where he served on church council, and GRAIL committee; holding several positions (including President) throughout the years. He was a lifetime Scout Master with Troop 223.
Gene was a man of many hobbies and interests. Among his many passions, he found particular joy in the world of classic cars, model trains and eagles. He was also a member of Skyline Drive Corvette Club. Gene's love for any card game was legendary; from intense rounds of UNO and 500 Rummy to lively games of pinochle, he was always ready for friendly competition. A true outdoorsman at heart, Gene found joy in being one with nature. From going camping under the stars to cutting his grass and tending to his garden, he found happiness in the simple pleasure of being outside. Gene's adventurous spirit also led him to explore the world, fueling his passion for travel.
Yet, it was in the cozy confines of his home where his true magic shone. Every holiday season, he transformed his house into a spectacle of festive twinkling lights, vibrant decorations, and the unmistakable spirit of Christmas. His dedication to spreading holiday cheer earned him the endearing moniker, "Father Christmas". Beyond his seasonal flair, one of Gene's most beloved traditions was his annual family Easter egg hunt, which grew to include the entire neighborhood. It was a testament to his generous spirit and his love for bringing joy to the children in his family and neighborhood.
However above all else, Gene's greatest joy came from his family; especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, finding immense fulfillment in watching his family grow and thrive. Gene leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories that will forever be treasured by his family and all who were blessed enough to have known him.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM at Auman's Inc. Funeral Home, 390 W. Neversink Rd., Reading, PA 19606. Prayer service will promptly commence in the funeral home at 9:30 AM, with Pastor Mary Wolfe officiating. The service will be live streamed via the funeral home's Facebook page to allow friends and family near and far to join in commemorating Gene's life. Graveside committal will immediately follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reiffton.
