William Martin DeCapito Pennell, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at his organic farm with his sister, Denise, by his side.
Billy was born January 3, 1950, in Ravenna, Ohio. He graduated from Rootstown High School in 1968 where he lettered in football and basketball. He attended Akron University.
It was on his grandparents’ farm in Rootstown that Billy developed his love for farming. He and his sister had many fun, memorable times on the farm. Billy enjoyed riding the tractor with his grandfather and helping in the garden. In 1974 Billy purchased the Huonker farm that his grandparents built. His interest in organic farming led him to expand the farm which became known as Rootstown Organic Farm. For 43 years it was a meaningful life to him.
He was an early pioneer in organic farming and certified in 1990, the first year national organic certification was available. Through his farm, he embodied the initial spirit of organic production of working gently with the earth to grow food.
He gained so much knowledge and was known by many for his garlic – some years offering as many as 30 varieties to customers. Billy sold his produce at the Shaker Square Farm Market and the Haymaker Market in Kent and elsewhere in the region. He introduced many in our area to “black garlic.” Even more importantly he introduced / mentored many beginning farmers and others to the work involved growing food.
His importance in the community of farmers and friends will be greatly missed. Billy was a generous and humble person who lived by his principles. He led a life of integrity ~ lived what he spoke and spoke what he lived. He died at peace, and on the farm that he loved.
He was preceded in death by his mother Ella Huonker DeCapito, step-father Arthur DeCapito, father William Pennell, grandparents John Martin and Hazel Huonker.
He is survived by his sister Denise DeCapito Linton (Kim), niece Haley (Wade) Martin, nephew Trevor (Beth) Linton, and 5 great nieces and nephews Mackenzie, Jacob, & Gavin Martin, Grayson & Ella Linton. Also surviving are his brothers: Jeff Pennell, Craig (Colleen) Pennell, Hugh Pennell, and step-mother Marge Pennell; nieces Jessica (Rick) Shakleford and Lauren Pennell, nephews William “Billy” Pennell and Jared Pennell, great-niece Lillie Rich and great-nephew Cody Pennell.
Amaris McLat began as a worker on the farm, but friendship grew out working side by side. She feels as close as if he were family. She appreciates the beauty of learning from him over the decade they worked the land together. He is also survived by close friends including: Alex Atkins, Ted Welser, Rich Knapp, Danielle Seidita, Carol Busson, and Julie Grant.
Billy’s wishes for cremation are being honored and a private service will be held. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.wood-kortright-borkoski.com.
