Sandra “Sandy” Lee (Klatka) Hansen, 75, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2022 at her home in Brimfield. Sandy was born June 25, 1946, in Chardon, Ohio to Paul Karl and Wilma Francis (Naftzger) Klatka. A lifelong resident of the area, Sandy graduated in 1964 from Kent State University High School.
Mrs. Hansen was a master dog groomer. She owned and operated Sandy’s Pet Stop located on the corner of Franklin Ave. and Summit St. in Kent from 1987 to 1995 when she sold the business. Sandy didn’t retire from grooming altogether; she continued to groom dogs for special clients at her home. Sandy worked with the Portage County APL to raise funds and awareness, gave classes on grooming, and donated grooming services.
In 1949, Sandy’s parents opened Moon-Glo, a roller-skating center that was located on S.R. 59 in Franklin Township. Sandy became a proficient skater as a child and won many competitive awards. She was a member of the Amateur Roller-Skating Association. As an adult, Sandy co-owned the roller rink and managed it until its closure in 1999. Moon-Glo was a mainstay in the area for 50 years and its history was important to Sandy. She liked to tell stories about the couples that met and fell in love at the rink, as well as recalling her encounters with celebrities that performed live such as B.B. King, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and Snoop Dogg to name a few. She kept in touch with regular skaters and employees for over 20 years after its closure. Sandy was still skating at 75.
Sandy was preceded in death by her son, Billy Ferris. Sandy and her son lived adjacent to each other in Brimfield Township and their property was the site of many festivities. They hosted Cub Scout events on their property to help boys get their badges and learn camping skills. They held high school reunions, fish fries, BBQs, and more. Sandy recalled that there were grand parties every weekend; they were able to enjoy spending their time with friends and family. She particularly enjoyed baking and making traditional Polish dishes for large gatherings.
Sandy is also preceded in death by her parents, her first husband William Ferris, and her second husband Larry Hansen.
Survivors include grandsons: Ayden Ferris, Indianapolis, IN and Zach Mangus, Brimfield, OH; two great-grandsons, sister-in-law, Fay Hansen, Hudson, OH; lifelong friend, David Danner, Streetsboro, OH, and many Klatka cousins.
In keeping with Sandy's wishes, there will be no services, but friends are invited to share in a Celebration of Life at the American Legion, Post 496 located at 1945 Mogadore Rd., Kent, Ohio on June 30th from 5 to 8 p.m.
