Michael was born in Akron, Ohio on August 18, 1946 to parents Michael and Katherine (Kreitz) Szalay. Michael was a veteran and Sergeant of the U.S. Marine Corps having honorably served multiple tours in Vietnam from 1964 to 1970. As a member of the 8th marine, 2nd marine division and 4th marine he earned the Presidential Award and National Defense Medal.
Michael went on to graduate with a BS in Industrial Management and enjoyed a career in facility management/maintenance supervisor working at DeBartolo Properties, Hoban High School, Akron Public Schools and retiring after 22 years at Chagrin Falls Schools.
Michael was the Boy Scout leader of troop 95 for 15 years with the Akron Boy Scout Council and enjoyed his association with Habitat for Humanity. He enjoyed camping and being in the outdoors, traveling and reading about history. Michael’s grandchildren were most important to him along with his dog Mocha.
He leaves his wife Ann (Carpenter) Szalay and his children: Matthew B. (Kanda) Szalay, Jonathon M. (Bobbi Jo) Szalay and Samantha (Mark) Szalay Whieldon. Michael will also be sadly missed by his grandchildren: Trey, Alexis, Ashley, Matthew Jr., Zachary, Addison, Eli and Maxwell. Also surviving are his sister Mary Margaret Amonett and brothers-in-law William H. Carpenter and Charles R. Carpenter.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Kathleen Selnick and his in-laws Elizabeth and Basil Carpenter.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, July 9, 2021, at the Kent Presbyterian Church, 1456 E. Summit, Kent, Ohio.
