Mary (Kenward) Lohr, age 90 of Randolph, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Robinson Memorial Hospital. She was born February 22, 1921, in Ravenna Ohio. She is preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Earl Lohr.
Mary was a graduate of Ravenna High School after which she attended Hiram College where she received her degree in Secondary Education in 1943. After graduating from Hiram, she pursued a Master's Degree in Library Science at Case Western Reserve University. She left library work to work with special needs children.
She initiated the building of the first facility of Happy Days School in Ravenna which opened in 1955. Mary became the administrator of the school in 1960 until her retirement in 1981. In 1984, Happy Days School dedicated the Mary Lohr Therapeutic Play Center in her honor. She also served on the Governor's Task Force for Rehabilitation Services.
Mary was a member of the St. Joseph Parish in Randolph. She was active in the Ohio Association for Retarded Citizens of Portage County, Citizens Local Committee for Residential Services, Ohio Education Association, Northeast Ohio Education Association and the National Education Association.
Survivors include her son: Michael Lohr, foster sons; Keith (Grace) Angel and their children Matthew (Jen), Kathleen, and Ryan; Robert (Sue) Bittinger and their children Lisa and Doug; sister-in-law Anna Knect; nieces Betty, Margaret, Jeannie, and Betty Jean.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Reverend Ed Wieczorek at 11:00 am on Monday, April 4, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2643 Waterloo Rd., Randolph. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends will be received from 1:00-4:00 pm on Sunday, April 3rd at the Wood¬-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna and 1 hour prior to funeral services at the church.
The family would like to thank Dr. V Kopyev, nurses and staff at Robinson Memorial Hospital and Robinson Hospice for their compassionate care and kindness throughout Mary's illness and a very special blessing to the nurses and aides that staff the Lohr home.
