Joseph G. Smith, age 89 of Charlestown, passed away Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Robinson Memorial Hospital.He was born April 24, 1920, in Edinburg, Ohio, a son of the late Boyd G. and Wilamina (nee Makin) Smith. Joe was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ravenna. He was known as a “jack-of-all-trades” and had worked many jobs throughout his life, including: the basket factory in Wayland, the Ravenna Arsenal during WWII, Nehi Bottling Co., Wartko Construction, Hanna Co. Pipeline, and finally constructing and operating Edgewood Mobile Home Park. Joe was an avid basketball and baseball player, and helped coach many area baseball teams in his earlier years.Survivors include his beloved wife of 67 years Margaret (nee Thomas) Smith; his daughter: Sherill Ann (Lou) Buitrago of Livermore, CA; grandchildren: Sonya (Sean) Hardy, Shawnel (Mike) Herbst, Serena (Jason) Rhoton, Joseph Smith, and Sarah Smith; great-grandchildren: Makinna, Hollind, and Adriaa Hardy, Braedyn Herbst, Teaginn Rhoton, Hannah Smith, and Eloise Smith; also survived by his sister Beryl Jean Burgess of California.He was preceded in death by his son Wayne “Buddy” Smith, his sisters Grace Sells, Eulala Arnold, and Gloria Bovard, and his brother David Smith.Friends will be received Sunday from 2-4 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, where funeral services will be officiated by Pastor Scott Purdum and Reverend Vernon White on Monday at 11:00 AM.
