Joseph C. “Butch” Kasper, 85, passed away Friday, June 17, 2011. He was born in Blaine, Ohio on August 25, 1925, the son of Andrew and Appollonia (Niekro) Kasper. He lived for many years in Blaine, Lansing, Martins Ferry, and St. Clairsville, Ohio before moving with his family to Ravenna in 1964.
Joe graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1943 and joined the Navy. During WWII he served for 2 and one half years as a signalman aboard a number of ships, ending on the light cruiser USS Oklahoma City. He married Mary Ann (Torok) Kasper in 1951 and completed training in the Ohio Highway Patrol in 1953. Joe served in a number of eastern Ohio posts including Salem, Wintersville, St. Clairsville, and Ravenna. Retired from the Highway Patrol after 27 years service, he became a bailiff for the Portage County Juvenile Court for 13 more years.
Joe was preceded in death by children David, Deborah, and Betsy; by brothers Chester and Alex, sister Frances, and by both parents. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann; sons Joseph (Kathy), William (Theresa), Robert (Beth), and Richard (Rhonda); by eleven grandchildren; and by his sister Evelyn Piccin of Lansing, Ohio.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at Immaculate Conception Church, 409 W. Main St., Ravenna, where Joseph was a member. Interment will take place later the same day at Linwood Cemetery in Blaine, Ohio with full military honors.
