He was born April 9, 1942, in Ravenna, Ohio, to parents Malon and Mildred Ruth (Hillard) Spangler. John was a member of Randolph United Methodist Church and worked as an electrician with Local 306 in Akron.
John proudly served his country as a member of the US Navy and was truly patriotic throughout his life. He was a member of the Charity Lodge F&AM in Deerfield and Unity Lodge F&AM in Ravenna. John was an active member of the East Ohio EMMAUS Community.
John helped his father farm as a child and was a member of 4H. He was an avid sports fan, especially football, and enjoyed hunting. John was also a skilled handyman who was always tinkering with something. He even built his family’s home in 1972.
While attending Randolph High School, John met Patricia A. Neal. The two went on their first date at his Junior Prom, and began a lifelong journey as soul mates. The couple eloped in Rockville, Maryland, and were married on April 11, 1963.
John is survived by his beloved wife Patricia and their children: James L. (Susan) Spangler, Marie L. (Jerry) Erwin, Mahlon M. (Marica) Spangler, as well as seven grandchildren, and his sister Hallie Hostetler. John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Thomas Spangler.
