John B. Matthews

John was born on July 6, 1943 in Ravenna, Ohio to parents Burton and Recie (Kerley) Matthews. John was retired after 30 years of service as a braider technician at Parker-Hannifin in Ravenna. Prior to his long career he had spent 13 years at Davey Compressor. He had been an avid drag racer at Quaker City Dragway, winning in both Super Pro and Quick 16 races. John loved trapshooting on a team with his wife and shooting protector with his best friend, Carl Lohmier. In his younger days Coon hunting was a big part of his life. Many times he would pay for Christmas presents with the money he made from selling their hides. John was a long-time member of the Ohio Gun Collectors Association and always enjoyed attending their gun shows. He loved going to Hartville and Rogers flea markets, dabbling in antiques and setting up as a vendor at Hartville on the Holidays. Most of all he married his best friend Kay, his grandchildren were the love of his life, and family meant everything to him.

John is survived by his wife Kay and his daughters: Debbie (Donald) Wine and Beverly Matthews. He also leaves his beloved grandchildren Rick Wine, John (Amy) Wine, Jimmy Wine, Cybill (Allen) Hamilton, Amanda (Matt Wiedlund) Riemenschneider, Nathan Matthews and great-grandchildren: Abbie & Jessie Wine, Zoey Hamilton, and Chase Wiedlund. John is also survived by his siblings: Jack Matthews, Mary Cornell, Lee Bretti and Glenna Vann. He will also be sadly missed by his many nieces & nephews and his best friend Carl Lohmier.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson Matthew John Riemenschneider and Debbie & Beverly’s mother, Bonnie Matthews-Dietrich.

The family would like to thank the University Hospital Seidman Cancer Center, Doc Marquinez and all of his staff for their wonderful care and kindness.

Friends will be received to celebrate John’s life on Monday, July 1, 2019 at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm.
