She was born September 15, 1950, in Maple Heights, Ohio, to parents Harold F. and Erline S. (Scheffler) Chess. Joann graduated from Kent State University with her Master’s Degree. She went on to teach for 35 years at Southeast High School, primarily as the advanced English teacher and outdoor pursuits instructor. She also taught the drama class and helped produce several plays at the school. Joann taught night classes at Kent State University for many years as well.
Joann had many wide ranging interests in life. She was a bagpiper and member of the MacCuallim Highlanders Pipe and Drum Band, as well as Clan Macnahtan. She participated as an UK Exchange Teacher in 1986 – 1987. Joann was an avid skier and member of the National Ski Patrol. She worked many summers as a park ranger for several National Parks.
Joann also had a deep love for her horses and her dogs, beginning at a young age. She continued to ride horses up until her passing, and was a member of the Gordon Setter Club of America.
Joann is survived by her beloved husband Steve Carter, who she married September 11, 1999. She is also survived by her siblings: Ronnie (Charlene Ragsdale-Chess) Chess, Nancy (Chuck) Griffith, and Timothy (Rose Stine) Chess.
Friends and family will be received Saturday, April 2, 2022, from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM with a funeral service officiated by Pastor Laurie Metzko at 12:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E.
