He was born April 14, 1915, in Huntsville, Alabama, a son of the late Archabald Bethel and Hallie (Wilson) Webb. James was a decorated veteran of WWII, having served in the 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army. Mr. Webb was awarded a Purple Heart after suffering a shrapnel wound while in Normandy. On May 2, 2012, he received the Legion of Honor, the highest military award given by France, for his service in the French liberation during WWII.
Mort was a member of the Randolph United Methodist Church, and also served as past president for the AARP Ellet Chapter and the Randolph Senior Citizens. He was a farmer and the owner of Mar-Vel Construction until retiring 30 years ago.
Mort loved music. He helped to form the Randolph Jammers and loved dancing with his wife as part of the Ohio Country and Western Music Association, Akron Chapter. He also enjoyed gardening and travel. Most of all, he loved his family and his Lord.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years Margaret (Vest) Webb; children: Peach (Larry) Schilmiller, Trudy (Tyrone) Neff, Morton (Joyce) Webb, Nancy (Christopher) Kline, Ruth (David) Davis, and David Webb; as well as his brother William Webb of Naples, Florida, and his 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mort was preceded in death by his brothers Daniel, Edgar, and Solon Webb.
Friends will be received Wednesday, May 9, 2012, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna. Pastor Karen Drotar will officiate the funeral service at 11:00 AM on Thursday at the Randolph United Methodist Church, 4078 Waterloo Rd, Randolph. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Randolph with military honors provided by the US Army and the 82nd Airborne Division Association Akron Chapter.
