He lived in Deerfield and Atwater all his life. He was a graduate of Southeast High School and Maplewood Career Center. Jim worked in the metallurgy department at PTC Alliance Midwest for 25 years and also was co-owner of Dottie’s Detour in Atwater, Ohio with his wife Dottie.
Jim was preceded in death by his stepfather Gerald Shuman, his grandparents; Norman and Harriette Streely and Alton and Nita Burkey.
Jim is survived by his wife of 16 years, Dorothy (Brown-Adkins) Burkey, his mother Elizabeth “Betsy” Shuman of West Virginia, father William Richard (Elaine) Burkey of Deerfield and sister Susan Mullany of Missouri. Surviving also are his step-sisters: Catherine (Rob) Burkey of Deerfield, Cheryl (Craig) Wharff of Newport, step-brothers: Arland Shuman of Ravenna, Don Sillaman III of Marietta and Kevin (Davonna) Sillaman of Franklin. He also leaves Dorothy’s children: Natalie (John Rader) Jones of Kent, Tony (Jessica Skeens) Adkins of Huntington, West Virginia, grandchildren: Dominique Adkins, Gabrielle Capien, Hunter Adkins, Angelica Burr and Brandon Burr. Surviving also is great-granddaughter Olivia Lambert, nieces: Amanda Mullany, Hannah Mullany, nephew Joseph Mullany of Missouri and many friends too numerous to mention and his beloved pets: Jackson, Ginger, Bernie and Jade.
No services are scheduled and a memorial service will take place at a later date.
