“Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.” These words in the Gospel of Matthew precisely defines Frank Kurtz (aka Mr. Kent State) who passed away peacefully in the morning of May 11, 2023, surrounded by his family. Frankie was born in Columbus on November 29, 1964, and was a special needs child battling cerebral palsy since birth. Although not being able to walk and subsequently beating throat cancer at the age of 24, Frankie overcame these and other obstacles to be a blessing to all that had the good fortune to know him. If you knew Frankie you would say what disability, I don’t see any disability.
He graduated from Kent State University with an English major and a degree in education. Frank taught school for many years before accepting a volunteer position with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In this capacity Frank touched many people with his magnetic personality and kind and gentle ways. Everyone was captivated by his beautiful smile, athletes in particular as they left the field after a game, win, or lose. Frankie always believed the effort was the key and that not everyone can always win (although it sure is nice when you do).
Frankie was compassionate, kind and always concerned with the welfare of others, it was a blessing to be in his company. It is hard to imagine how many people knew or knew of him, to the extent that it was impossible to go anywhere without people gravitating to him. To borrow a line from a popular song “to know, know, know him is to love, love, love him” and we truly love Frankie. If anyone deserves to rest in peace, harmony, and fellowship it would be Frankie. We know that the Lord greeted Frankie by saying “well done, good and faithful servant.”
Friends and family will be received Wednesday, May 17, 2023, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM with a funeral service following at 6:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna. Private burial will take place at Union Cemetery in Columbus.
