He was a long-time resident of Palmyra Township and moved to Rootstown in 2015. Born on
March 12, 1925, in Balaton, Hungary. He was the second child of the late Imre and Ilona Simon.
Being a proud Hungarian, he believed in the strong work ethic he learned from his industrious
parents. As a teenager he was apprenticed to a local boat builder where he learned his
exceptional carpentry skills. He served two years duty in the Hungarian Army in World War II.
At the age of 31 and being sponsored by a Cleveland Church along with several other young
men, he came to America. He never saw his family again. He took pride in saying that within
days he was employed and was never without work until his retirement. His resume included
factory piece work, home construction carpentry and heavy machine maintenance.
While living and working in Cleveland, he met the late Margaret Marko whom he married in
1962. They were married 35 years.
Emery enjoyed camping with family, gardening, trips to Florida with Margaret, cooking
Hungarian favorites, classical music, and Lawrence Welk. He kept the bird feeders full, the
indoor plants watered, the yard manicured and welcomed any opportunity to use his carpentry
skills. In later years he enjoyed word search puzzles, an occasional game of rummy and
breakfast with the guys. In all things he exhibited an extreme measure of orderliness, a habit he
attributed to his military service.
Family survivors include Steve Marko, Toni (Frank) Kramer, Ricky Marko, Suzie (Buell) Hall, Eddie
Marko, Wallace (Ava) Wagner, Russell (Michelle) Wagner, numerous great and great great
grandchildren and stepdaughter, Eleanor Lalos.
He was a faithful member of Rootstown Church of Hope since 1998, formally Rootstown United
Methodist Church and enjoyed serving in various capacities in fellowship. This is where he met
his cherished companion and caretaker, Helen Ljung.
At his request cremation has taken place. Friends and family can join a Memorial Service on
Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 1:00 pm at the Rootstown Church of Hope officiated by Pastor
Donna Mills. A private burial service will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Emery’s memory to the Rootstown Church of
Hope or the Rootstown Fire Department.
