Edna Russell Smith died at the age of 92 on November 25, 2014 after a short illness. Edna was a meticulous homemaker, taking the care of her family seriously. Edna was an avid gardener and baker, she was well known for her beautiful red rose bushes, as well as her delicious cakes, pies and cookies. Edna will also be remembered for her quick wit and unexpected sense of humor.
Edna was born in Blackstock, South Carolina and moved to Rock Hill South Carolina at a young age where she was baptized at Crossroad Baptist Church. She attended school in Rock Hill, and learned to be the tremendous cook she was while growing up there. In 1953, Edna moved to Ohio to live with her beloved Aunt Mary. In Ohio she met and married Joseph Smith; together they raised six children.
Edna was the youngest of nine children, born to Julia Cheatum and her step-father Joshua Cheatum. Edna was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph, two wonderful sons-Roosevelt and Terry, and eight siblings-Lucille, Walter, Wesley, Lawrence, James, Adeline, Robert and Francis.
Edna leaves behind to cherish her memory one daughter, Phyllis; three sons-Larry (Donna), Victor and Joseph Jr. (Denise); 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and a host of loving family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2014, from 10:30 AM until the 11:00 AM funeral service at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, OH 44266. Interment will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg.
