Yolanda Estelle Leonard Overby, 96, passed peacefully on Wednesday evening, September 7, 2016. She was born June 5, 1920 to the late Charlie and Addie Leonard on the Reynolda Estate in Forsyth County, NC.
Her family briefly lived in Garner, NC and later moved to Lexington, NC. She resided on the property of the Junior Order Children’s Home where her father was the farm manager. She graduated from Meredith College in 1941 and began a teaching career in Creswell, NC.
After the United States entered World War II, she returned to Davidson County and continued teaching in Wallburg, NC. Yolanda enjoyed a variety of employment, including working for the FBI in Washington, DC under the direction of J. Edgar Hoover. One of her favorite jobs was working as an assistant case worker for the Davidson County Department of Social Services.
On March 15, 1953, she married her darling Linwood Hugh Overby. They enjoyed fifty-four years together before he preceded her in death. After honeymooning in Cuba, Yolanda moved to Ahoskie, NC and enjoyed becoming a homemaker spending many happy hours cooking and trying new recipes. She was blessed with two sons and loved taking care of them. She spent time helping them with music and art and as a den mother for their Cub Scouts troop. Yolanda was filled with wanderlust. The family enjoyed many vacations, and on one she planned a special meeting with Harry S. Truman.
In 1970 the family moved to Raleigh, NC, where she resided until her passing. They joined Trinity Baptist Church. Never one to have idle hands, Yolanda was always playing cards, making crafts or planning her next trip. She and Linwood traveled to over thirty-five countries.
Yolanda is survived by her sons, Linwood Hugh Overby, Jr. and wife, Deborah, David Leonard Overby and wife, Dona; six grandchildren, Christopher and wife, Christina, Caroline, Matthew and wife, Justina, Rachel, David and John Overby; three great-grandchildren, Anna-Kate, Allison and Matthew, Jr.; her sister, Charlotte Leonard Fulp, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 15 at 10:00 AM, one hour prior to her funeral service at 11:00 AM to be held in the Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum, 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC.
