Mr. Smith was the son of Major Ervin Smith and Roxannah Sotonica (Tonnye) Ellington Smith. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II and fought at The Battle of Peleliu in the Pacific. After returning home from the war, he attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Upon graduation he became a state bank auditor for North Carolina and had a long and successful career. His assignments took him all over the State endless times, in which he fell in love with its beauty, especially the mountains and the coast. Upon retirement he traveled extensively through out the United States. He was a kind, loving and generous person, who will be missed by all who knew him.
He was predeceased by a sister Olivia Rose Wiggins, his brothers Wayland Hoyt and Thurston Ervin. He is survived by a sister Gladys S. Cheek, a brother Carl E. Smith, nieces June K. Cheek, Sharon S. Smallwood, Janice W. Clevenger & nephews Gary T. Cheek, David W. Cheek, Michael W. Smith, Ervin and Kent Smith.
Visitation will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 2nd at the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on St. Mary's Street in Raleigh, with a graveside service to follow at 3:00 pm at Oakwood Cemetery.
