Bill graduated from the Augusta Military Academy, and then continued his education at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. After completing his education, Bill enlisted in the US Army. He was a Korean War veteran and served from March 1952 through March, 1954.
After the war, he began his career in Raleigh as founder of Qualified Plans Services, Inc. Upon retirement, he made many friends in the grill room and on the tennis courts of Carolina County Club. Bill could also be spotted on Thursday nights dancing and enjoying the music of “The Embers” until the wee hours of the morning. Most of all he enjoyed travel with his wife, Bettie, prior to her death. After her death, he enjoyed 20 plus years of summer trips with his children and grandchildren.
Bill devoted himself to bettering his community through his great works with many charitable organizations such as the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and their Board of Visitors, the Cancer Society and Girl Scouts. He was an active member of the UNC Chemistry Advisory Board in the College of Arts and Sciences. He also supported funds that have helped many students and faculty at Carolina, including the Emmett Gladstone Rand Premedical Scholarship in Chemistry, the Bettie Allison Rand Lectures in Art History and the Louise Goodyear Rand and Mary Ausley Allison Honors Fund for the Fine Arts. Bill also served as Treasurer and Crusade Chairman for the Wake County Cancer Society. With the Girl Scouts, Bill was a Charter Member of the Wake County Advisory Board and on the Board of Directors, Pines of Carolina Girl Scouts.
Surviving are daughter Allison Rand Guess and husband, Garland Douglas Guess of Raleigh; son, William G. Rand, Jr. and wife, Kimberly King Rand of Roxboro; granddaughters, Anne Rand Bettendorf and husband Justin, Mary Rand Harward and husband Stephen, Edith Guess Enfield and husband Zach, Laura Rand Matheny and husband Jonathan, Katherine Rand Guess, and Maggie Grace Rand; grandsons, Marvin Alexander Guess and wife Megan, William Goodyear Rand, III; and great grandchildren, Aurora Bettendorf, Ausley Harward, Pax and Emmett Guess. He is also survived by his brother Emmett Gladstone Rand of Wilmington, DE. Bill is predeceased by his wife, Bettie Allison Rand; father, Emmett G. Rand; and mother, Louise Goodyear Rand.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 28th at 1:30pm at St. George’s Anglican Church. The burial will take place immediately following the services at Oakwood Cemetery.
