A funeral service will be held in Greensboro at 3:00 PM Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at Peace United Church of Christ. Interment will be held at 12:00 PM Thursday, February 29, 2024 Lakeview Memorial Park.
Bill was born on October 15, 1922 in Rowan County, NC to the late Fred and Mable (Peeler) Kluttz. He graduated from Brevard College and was drafted into the army in 1943, serving 2 years during World War II in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe as a communications specialist.
A month after returning from the service, Bill took a job with Southern Bell Telephone Company, where he met the love of his life, his wife Lola. They married in 1949 and were together until her death in 2015.
At a young age, Bill became interested in discovering how machinery worked and became quite adept at spotting and repairing issues with small appliances, plumbing, and many types of gadgets. He owned a neighborhood repair shop as a high school boy, and reluctantly closed it to attend college. He took many courses in engineering, electronics, teletype, telephone and switchboard repair over his lifetime. When he and his wife bought an appliance, he would take a look at its mechanics and could figure out how to repair it. He once took a course in refrigeration repair and it was a source of consternation to him that his refrigerator never broke down.
Shortly after getting married, Bill and Lola moved to Greensboro and joined Peace Church, where they became lifetime members. Over the years, Bill became involved in many church service projects, was a member of the men’s fellowship and served on the property committee, often going to church at odd hours to make a repair himself or to meet a repairman there.
Always happiest when he was serving others, Bill volunteered with Mobile meals, Salvation Army, the Food Bank and as a member of the Civitan Club.
A member of “The Greatest Generation”, Bill never asked for credit for anything he did and if he was having difficulty, he never complained. He rarely talked about his military service and was always happy to help others in any capacity he could, often handing out grocery gift cards when he thought someone was in need.
Bill is survived by his four children, Robin Gurley and her husband Tony of Raleigh; William Kluttz III and wife Deborah of Carmel, Indiana; Robert Kluttz and wife Teresa of Trussville, Alabama; and Sherri Kluttz of Greensboro; six grandchildren: Ashley Johnson, Robert Gurley, Michael Gurley, Scott Kluttz, Andrew Kluttz and Danielle Kluttz; and 7 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Peace United Church of Christ, 2714 West Market Street, Greensboro NC 27403.
Arrangements are in the care of Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605.
