William A. Billings, 77, passed away on Sunday afternoon, September 15, 2024 at UNC Rex Hospital after an unexpected and sudden health issue required his admission. Bill was born in Lincolnton, NC to the late Roy Landrum Billings and Floylee Goodson Billings on February 4, 1947. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Jenny Burke Billings and his family of friends.
Bill was raised in Burlington, NC and graduated from Walter Williams High School in 1965. He attended Elon College and graduated with a major in accounting in 1969. He served in various positions with the North Carolina Department of State Auditor with a thirty-year career as an Assistant State Auditor, Supervisor and then Director of the Performance Audit Division, and Director of Accounting, Research and Training.
During his career with the State Auditor’s office, he earned his CPA certificate and was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the North Carolina Association of CPAs. In addition, he served on the NCACPA’s Governmental Accounting and Auditing Committee.
Bill loved to travel, and took many enjoyable trips with his wife and great friends and travel buddies, Jane and Jerry Goodwin. In addition, he enjoyed playing poker, going to Las Vegas, playing golf, and going to the annual Preakness horse races with his friends.
Bill was a good and loyal friend, and kind to others. As his health deteriorated in his later years, he lived with his limitations and did not complain, even though he was not able to do the things that he so enjoyed doing. He will be missed greatly by those who knew him and those who were able to get to know him best.
To honor Bill, please take a moment and leave a favorite memory of him, and rather than sadness, think of the good times you may have had with him.
A Celebration of Life for Bill will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024 beginning at 1 p.m. in the Chapel Mausoleum of Raleigh Memorial Park, which is located at 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh NC 27612. Friends and family are invited to gather and share memories of Bill and to celebrate his life.
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to NC State Veterinarian School, or any charity of your choice.
