Mr. Arnold was born in Greenville, NC to the late William Vance Arnold, Sr. and Ruth Aman Arnold. He was a veteran of the US Army where he worked in the Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army. Mr. Arnold was a graduate of East Carolina University. He was a very talented writer and was employed with the News and Observer and other local newspapers as a sports reporter during his college years. Later, after his military service, he was employed with the Alexandria Gazette and the Richmond News Leader. He was appointed as the Director of the NC Department of Travel and Tourism and later appointed by Governor Jim Hunt the first NC Film Commissioner, where he was instrumental in bringing the film industry to North Carolina.
Mr. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Jerry Arnold.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Jackson Arnold; son, Stephen Arnold of Raleigh; brother, John E. Arnold of Greenville, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609. The family will receive friends 1:00-2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Pinewood Memorial Park in Greenville, NC.
