Timothy Michael Hill

Tim attended Meridian High School in Meridian, Idaho, where he played football and earned the nickname “The Moose.” It was during high school that he began studying martial arts, competed in tournaments, and ultimately earned a black belt. He met his future wife Deborah Hill at his martial arts school. He was a skilled woodworker and built all the doors and trim at their first house. In those early days, Sundays were nearly always spent watching cooking shows and trying new recipes. Friends often said that no matter when they stopped by something was always cooking.

Nothing gave Tim more delight than his sons Ian and Connor Hill. Camping was a big part of family life and time spent together. Tim enjoyed fishing and had an uncanny ability to catch more fish than anyone else, which could be quite maddening. The family also skied together and enjoyed the hot springs of Idaho after a day on the slopes.

He was a deeply engaged father and happily served as a leader for their Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts troops when the family moved to North Carolina. He got a kick out of the goofy scout skits, but genuinely loved the opportunity to teach his sons so many skills. He cheered from the sidelines as his boys competed in the neighborhood swim team, and as accomplished fencers on their high school fencing team. He had a lifetime enjoyment of photography and reading, loved puns to an absurd degree, and could rarely be beaten at Go or Pente. He shared a love of computer and card games with his sons, and he would learn whatever games they wanted to play. Many Saturdays and evenings were spent together as comrades in arms in game worlds.

He was an accomplished chef and could make anything. Each year, November kicked off a flurry holiday baking, cookie decorating, and candy making. He drew his sons into the production and enjoyed that time with them. He wanted to pass on holiday traditions. Family, friends, and neighbors would receive astonishing volumes of confectionary. ‘Food is love’ to Tim, and cooking for others made him very happy.

He was a less than accomplished gardener, which became quite funny through the years.

Tim’s career reflected his fierce intelligence and enjoyment of figuring things out. He attended Boise State University and earned dual bachelor’s degrees in computer science and business administration in 1985. He earned a Master of Science degree in computer science from Idaho State University in 2004. He began his career as a tax auditor for the State of Idaho State Tax Commission – a job that gave him the opportunity to travel around the country. A deep interest in computers and programming led him to positions at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory in Idaho Falls where he worked for Westinghouse, Lockheed Martin, and Bechtel. When the family moved to North Carolina, Tim worked for Duke University Health Systems, and then Toshiba Global Consumer Services.

Tim is preceded in death by his brother Randy Hill and his mother Faye Marie (Hopkins) Hill. He is survived by his sons Ian Hill and Connor Hill, daughter-in-law Kelsey Wynne, his father Lester Hill, brother Tony Hill and sister-in-law Sandee Hill, sisters Vicky Price and Suzanne Struchan, much loved nieces and nephews Aimee Price-Alexander, Michelle Miclat, Angela Brown, Jeremy Raynor, Greg Raynor, and Kevin Raynor, and his dear cousin Cathie Martinez. He is also survived by his ‘practically adopted son’ Zane Walker, his former wife Deborah Hill, and Tamra Schuch whom he loved very much.
