Theodore “Ted” Reaves Reynolds, 85, passed away on May 28, 2018. Ted was born in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Alton Marcus Reynolds and Addie Reaves Reynolds, and grew up in Clinton, NC. After graduating high school, he served in the US Navy during the Korean War before returning to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for college and law school.
Following graduation in 1957, he practiced law for over 50 years in Raleigh.
An early downtown visionary, his interest in real estate began in 1968 with the purchase of a two-story house on West Edenton Street for his firm’s offices. In 1986 he built the Reynolds Building on the site. Eight years later, he purchased the historic Dodd-Hinsdale House, transforming it into Second Empire Restaurant and Tavern. In 2006 he built the 15-story Quorum Center, one of the first mixed-use office and residential projects in downtown Raleigh. He served on the BB&T Board of Directors from 1988 to 2002. An active alumni, he and wife Peggy hosted many gatherings for UNC Law at Bay Leaf Farm, their home in north Raleigh.
The couple were charter members of Benson Memorial United Methodist Church. While a lawyer by trade, he found immense joy piloting his airplane or mowing the pastures of his farm on the weekends. He also enjoyed many family summers at Wrightsville Beach.

He was predeceased by his brother Alton Marcus “Pete” Reynolds, Jr.
Ted is survived by his wife, Peggy Pusey Reynolds; daughter, Kim Reynolds (Rod) Garnas; son, David (Jesma) Reaves Reynolds. He is also survived by three grandchildren, David Reynolds, Jr., Ewan Reynolds, and Reynolds Garnas.
A private graveside service will take place on Friday, June 1st. Family and friends are invited to a reception celebrating his life on Sunday, June 3rd from 3-5 pm at Second Empire Restaurant, 330 Hillsborough St., Raleigh.
