Born in Harrisburg, PA, she loved spending her time with her extended family. After attending Dickinson College in Carlyle, PA, she taught high school English. She then went to Florida State University, where she earned an MA in Psychology. While in grad school, she met the love of her life, Richard. After marrying and finishing their degrees, they moved to North Carolina, first to Durham and then to Raleigh.
Suzanne worked as the first woman admissions counselor at NC State University and then stayed home to raise children while remaining active outside the home: always learning something new or volunteering with nonprofit organizations including Meals on Wheels, Disciplined Order of Christ, and Building Together. She loved to garden, and people would often stop on the street to admire her flowers. She loved to read and always appreciated book recommendations from family and friends. She was also a gifted artist who loved to paint, especially china.
Suzanne’s devout faith was central to who she was, and she spent much of her time leading and attending prayer groups and Bible studies. She was very active at Edenton Street United Methodist Church. Suzanne had a gentle, loving spirit and made lifelong friendships everywhere she went.
Preceding her in death were her sister Mary Lou Brassington and her brother George, both of whom she adored.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Richard; her son Chris (wife Jan) of Perdido Beach, AL; her daughter Hope Squires (husband Chris) of Blowing Rock, NC; grandsons Zachary Chandler (wife Melody) and Tyler Chandler, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held at Edenton Street United Methodist Church at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 9. For those unable to attend in person, you may view a livestream of the service by clicking the 'Join Livestream' link under Services, beginning at 4:30pm.
