Susan Reel King, a beloved daughter, sister, mother, friend, and champion of those that needed a voice passed away peacefully of heart complications on Monday, January 29, 2024. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering dedication to making the world a better place.
Susan was born September 29, 1972 in Durham, NC to Jane and Radford Reel, who greeted her with open arms on her arrival and now welcome her back into their loving embrace. Susan married her childhood sweetheart, Stacy King, in April of 1993 and were together for over 22 years. Their greatest joy came in 2010 with the birth of their daughter Bailey, now age 13. Stacy and Susan remained close after their divorce with a focus on co-parenting Bailey. Susan is also survived by her devoted brother, Bryan and his family, Anne, Sophie, and William, who will forever cherish her memory. Susan resided in various North Carolina cities throughout her life, notably Durham, New Bern, and Cary.
Susan's greatest joy in life was her daughter, Bailey King, whom she adored beyond measure. Bailey was the light of Susan's life, and her love for her daughter knew no bounds. As mother and daughter, Susan and Bailey have charged through life as fierce warriors for their beliefs. Susan’s passion for supporting those that needed support was her calling card and, no doubt, that determination to challenge those that need to be challenged will live on in Bailey.
Susan was not only a nurse by profession but an artist at heart. Her creativity was endless, and she expressed herself through her art with passion and authenticity. Whether she was using her training as a floral designer, decorating the perfect Christmas tree, or documenting her many adventures in a shadowbox or scrapbook, her creativity inspired us all.
Throughout her life, Susan lived with a fiery determination to fight for what was right and just. She was a champion for those in need, always lending her voice to causes she believed in. She was an avid supporter of LGBQT and women’s rights, often marching with her fellow advocates for a cause that needed awareness. Though these battles undoubtedly took a toll on her, Susan approached life with courage, grit, and an unwavering sense of justice. She was truly selfless when it came to those in need.
Susan loved all things art with an encyclopedic knowledge of music and movies. She lived her life to a soundtrack of Duran Duran and Rush. There is no doubt that Susan would list one of her greatest accomplishments as her rousing rendition of Tom Sawyer at a recent karaoke event.
In addition to her human family, Susan leaves behind her beloved feline companions, Tango, Salsa, and Charly, who brought her joy and companionship throughout the years.
Susan Reel King will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her laughter, humor, kindness, and indomitable spirit will continue to inspire and uplift those who carry her memory in their hearts.
