Sue Hicks went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on September 13, 2017 after a 31 month battle with leukemia. She was born Reva Susette Hilliard in Greensboro on September 18, 1946 to parents Newby and Neva Hilliard. Sue is survived by her husband Greg Hicks, son Nathan Hicks and daughter Cari Hicks Warren and her husband Dr. Eric Warren with granddaughters Finley and Murphy Warren of Charlotte. Also surviving Sue is her sister Carolyn Hilliard Kendrick and husband Ray Kendrick of Greensboro.
Sue graduated from Page High School and Croft Business College before marrying her childhood sweetheart Greg just before his senior year at NC State University. After graduation Greg and Sue joined Athletes in Action (AIA) Wrestling, a sports ministry affiliated with CRU (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ). Together they traveled all over the US speaking primarily on college and high school campuses using sports as a platform to share their faith in Christ. Their exciting travels are chronicled in a book called In His Grip- A True Story of a Team That Will Take You Down and Lift You Up.
After moving back to Raleigh, Sue became the administrative assistant of the NCSU Wolfpack Football Team’s assistant coaches. She served the coaches on staff under head coaches Dick Sheridan, Mike O’Cain, Chuck Amato and Tom O’Brian. She retired after 20 years in NCSU Athletics to care for her ailing Mother and spend time with her granddaughters, who lovingly call her Nanna Sue.
She was a founding member of Crossroads Fellowship Church. Greg and Sue led several Sunday School classes and served in may capacities over the years. Sue’s celebration of life service will be at Crossroads Fellowship Church at 3pm on Sunday, September 17 and visitation will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Millbrook Road on Saturday, September 16 from 4-6pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending financial love gifts to Hope Reins in Raleigh to honor Sue’s love of children and animals. Gifts can be made at: https://www.hopereinsnc.org/donate/ or by mail to: Hope Reins of Raleigh, 8420 Wake Forest Hwy, Raleigh, NC 27613.
