Stephen Mallard Whaley of Raleigh, NC, passed away on December 22, 2023, with his daughters by his side at the age of 75. "Steve" was born in Rocky Mount NC on February 3, 1948, to the late Manley Pigford Whaley and Virginia Odom Whaley. He graduated from Rocky Mount High School. He then graduated from Atlantic Christian College and he spent time serving in the Army Reserves. Steve and Vickie married in 1969 and soon after moved to Raleigh to start a family. They became members of St. Mark's United Methodist Church where they formed lifelong friendships. He loved playing golf, watching golf, traveling for work conventions to different countries with Vickie, Motown and beach music, Myrtle Beach trips with the family, going to all of his daughters’ soccer games, teaching them tennis, and was such a proud dad. He showed his love through cooking for family and friends and the Sunday cookouts were something that all the family enjoyed. Everyone was welcome as he made enough food for a small army, and it was typically his famous BBQ chicken or country style steak. His girls were able to see how many people he helped throughout the years as he had such a generous heart, but he never wanted it known by others.
Steve worked in the Insurance industry for 50 years and was a salesman through and through. He loved working hard for his family and was always thinking about his girls as well as his customers. He worked hard and he played hard and was always joking around. Even though he fought throat cancer and lost his voice in 2005, he did not let that slow him down. He was the strongest fighter. Over the years he went through many ups and downs, but he left this earth knowing he was forgiven and was looking forward to seeing his Vickie again and meeting his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Manley Pigford Whaley, his mother, Virginia Odom Whaley, and his sweet precious Wife, Vickie Taylor Whaley. He leaves behind three daughters; Stephanie Battle Whaley (Ray Montgomery), Jenna Whaley Nunnery (Jason Nunnery), Susan Blair Whaley Blackley (Patrick Blackley), his three grandchildren, Bowen Robert Nunnery, Presley Taylor Nunnery, Bella Grace Blackley; his sister and Brother-in-law, Patricia Whaley Jackson and John Ronald Jackson, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. His family would like to thank his many doctors, nurses and staff who have cared for him throughout the years and Heartland Hospice for their support in his final days on earth. His family received guests on Saturday, January 13, followed by a Service to honor his life at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 27612.
