Shirley was born June 22, 1930 in Fountain Springs, Pennsylvania to the late, Robert Wilson Ehret and Margaret Roberts Ehret.
Moving to North Carolina with her family in 1937, and residing in Raleigh since 1959, she was a graduate of Henderson High School and the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina, which is now UNC-Greensboro. Following college, she taught Distributive Education in North Carolina high schools.
Shirley was a people person who loved to cook, watch sports, traveling and vacationing at the beach. She truly enjoyed her exercise class, the staff, and her friends at the Rex Wellness Center. But more than anything, she loved her family and spending time with them.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence D. Mangum in 2002; her step-son, Dr. Michael D. Mangum of Macon, GA.; her step son-in-law, Hugh Freel of Coronado Ca; and her best friend, Ernestine G. Kistler of Raleigh.
Surviving are her three children, son, Michael L. Davis and wife Susan, daughter, Ellen R. Davis and partner Bruce Dunn, and son, Ned W. Mangum and wife Robin, all of Raleigh. She is also survived by a step-daughter, Jenny Freel of Coronado, CA; four grandchildren, Landon J. Davis and wife, Meredith of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Robert “Bear” Mangum, W. Guss Mangum, and Hugh E. Mangum, all of Raleigh.; four step-grandchildren, Gregg M. Mangum, David M. Mangum, and Liza Jane Mangum, all of Macon, GA, and Ryan M. Freel of Hermosa Beach, CA; a great-grandson, William L. Davis of Mount Pleasant , SC; an aunt, Polly E. Richards of Elysburg, PA; and several cousins.
A visitation will be held Friday, November 13, 2015 from 6-8pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary’s St. Raleigh. A funeral service to honor and celebrate Shirley’s life will be held Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 1pm at Hayes Barton Baptist Church, 1800 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh. Burial will follow the service at Raleigh Memorial Park.
