Scott Filmore Stidham, Sr., 90, a native of Raleigh, NC, surrounded by family, passed away on September 22, 2016. He grew up in Arkansas, but spent most of his life in Raleigh and Richmond, Va. He was born to the late Harold and Lena Stidham. Scott graduated with honors in Industrial Engineering at North Carolina State in 1950, where he was selected a member of the Golden Chain. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and later was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force.
Scott was employed by four major corporations during his long career – Dan River Mills, Reynolds Metals, Texas Gulf and CP&L. Among his accomplishments in the industry, Scott managed teams to develop the aluminum beverage can and to manufacture wing skins for the McDonald Douglas DC-10 commercial aircraft.
Scott’s primary interests in life were his family, his God and his country. He loved his wife Norma, his daughter and son and their spouses, and his four wonderful grandchildren. His goal was to teach and encourage all of them to achieve their goals with emphasis on God’s leadership. Scott was a longtime member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church where he held many leadership roles and later in life became an ardent advocate of the Disciple Bible Studies. His time at Hayes Barton UMC strongly solidified his spiritual walk with Jesus.
Having a great interest in young people, Scott was a co-founder of the Wake County Junior Achievement programs and served as general chairman of the 1979 Scout-O-Rama on behalf of the Raleigh Rotary Club. He also was a member of the NCNB City Board and three foundations at NC State. He served as chairman of the Meredith College Board of Associates for three years and belonged to the Carolina Country Club, The Assembly Club and the Sphinx Club.
