Sandra (Sandy) was born July 27, 1937 in Kannapolis, NC to Marion David Jones and Grace Fowler Jones. She graduated from AL Brown High School, attended Wake Forest University, and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in education in 1959. She married the love of her life, F. Douglas (Doug) Wilson that same year. They lived in Roanoke Rapids, Kannapolis, and then Raleigh for all their married lives. They were members of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church for many years, and more recently of Hayes Barton Baptist Church.
Sandy and Doug enjoyed all things UNC-CH Sports. They travelled extensively, following their beloved Tarheel teams, making many dear friends over the years. Sandy owned very little clothing that was not Carolina blue. For over forty years, she never missed a home UNC-CH basketball or football game.
Sandy leaves behind many who will cherish their memories of her exuberant sense of fun, and the love they shared with her. Among those: Doug, her devoted husband of almost 65 years; her daughter Marion Idol (Chris) of Matthews, NC; grandson Matt Idol (Stacey) and great-grandson Caleb of Greenville, SC; and grandson Stephen Idol of Aberdeen, NC. Also left behind are many dear friends. Sandy never met a stranger, especially one wearing Carolina Blue.
Love and deep appreciation go to Sandy’s very special caregivers during this last stage of her life: Tameka, Brandi, Sherri, Toniea, Mary, and Zaffa. Your love for her was evident and will never be forgotten. Also, special thanks go to Transitions LifeCare, pastors Kristen Muse and Marie Faulkner of Raleigh, and Tom Cabiness of Kannapolis.
A celebration of Sandy’s life will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 1:00PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary’s Street in Raleigh. Please wear a touch of UNC blue.
Graveside services in Kannapolis, NC will be private.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in Sandy’s memory to: Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh NC 27607 or online at transitionslifecare.org.
