Sally, a native of Raleigh, was born May 23, 1941 to Fannie Lloyd Upton and Howard Brown Upton. She attended Myrtle Underwood grade school, and graduated high school and Junior College at St. Mary’s in 1964. She received her degree in Medical Technology in 1966 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
After graduating, Sally married her husband of 57 years, Dr Walter Ray Gammon, also a Raleigh native, at White Memorial Presbyterian Church. During Ray’s years in medical school at UNC, Sally was a Research Assistant at both UNC Medical School and NC State University.
Sally and Ray resided many years in Chapel Hill. There they raised their two sons Christopher Howard Gammon and Ashley Melton Gammon. She was very active with the PTA in the Chapel Hill School System. Later, she was active in the Women's Club of Greenville and volunteered many hours at Pitt Memorial Hospital. Despite her battle with cancer, as well as the onset of blindness at an early age, Sally went on to lead a full and productive life.
Sally was known to be a smart, witty, unpretentious and caring person who was well liked by all who knew her. She had an easy way about her that quickly endeared her to her many friends. She could be depended on to give an honest answer to any question and was often sought after for her advice on a variety of issues. She was a great cook and homemaker. Her passions other than her family were her rose garden and her poodles; Chico, Ollie, Hanna, Jazz, Journey, Bella and Charli. She was a regular contributor to the SPCA. She also supported The Rescue Mission and the Salvation Army.
She is survived by her husband, her sons Christopher Howard Gammon of Long Island NY and Ashley Melton Gammon of Greenville NC, brother Thomas Howard Upton and his wife Denise New Dickens of Hillsborough NC, and grandchildren Garrison Ashley Liu-Gammon, Meiomi Victoria Liu-Gammon, Joseph Scott Gammon and Jordan Douglas Singer.
