Sallie Lee Walker, age 84, a resident of the Cypress Retirement Community of Raleigh, died Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Rex Hospital. She died peacefully and was surrounded by all of her family, including her grandchildren.
Sallie was born on September 18, 1927 in Goldsboro, N.C., the daughter of Harry Fitzhugh Lee and Julia Borden Lee, and was preceded in death by her brother, William Fitzhugh Lee. She graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1944 and from St. Mary’s School in 1946. She made her debut in 1946 at the Terpsichorean Ball of North Carolina. Sallie graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1948, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.
Sallie was very active in church and community affairs. She was a former member of the Vestry at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, where she was a Stephen Minister and President of the ECW. She was also a past member of the Board of Trustees of the Alumni Association of St. Mary’s School. She was a former officer of the Junior League of Raleigh and chairman of the Wake Committee of the Colonial Dames of America. She loved to read and was a member of the Olla Podrida, Johnsonian, and High Noon book clubs.
Sallie was an active outdoors person that inspired all of her children and grandchildren. She loved to walk, whether it be on the Alamance Drive greenway, at the Cypress, or at the beach. Sallie also loved to play tennis, travel and work in her garden. Her family gathered every summer at Atlantic Beach for “Walker Week,” where many great memories were made.
Sallie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and recently great-grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Harry G. Walker Jr. and her sister, Mildred L. Stout. In addition, she is survived by her children, Harry G. Walker, III and his wife Linda B. Walker, F. Borden Walker and his wife Michele C. Walker, Dan M.L. Walker and his wife Kay L. Walker and Nathaniel H. Walker and his wife Curry R. Walker; her grandchildren, H. Lee Walker and his wife Elizabeth D. Walker, S. Louisa Walker, Kimberly C. Walker, Lindsay B. Walker, Daniel L. Walker, 2nd Lt. Drew H. Walker, Sara M. Walker, Nathan H. Walker, E. Ty Walker, Will G. Walker; and one great grandchild, Anna L. Walker.
A memorial service will be held at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 with a reception to follow at the Parish Hall.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Michael's Church, 1520 Canterbury Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27608, or to the Rena Harding Walker and Julia Borden Lee Scholarship at St. Mary’s School, 900 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, N.C. 27603.
