Deeply important to her were family, friends, church and music. She taught piano as a young adult in Cheraw, S.C., and delighted in the songs of Tony Bennett in later years. She relished family gatherings, both in Raleigh and at North Litchfield, where she spent the summer. She cherished the close friendships she developed all her life, including the companions she met as an avid bridge player.
Ruth Ludlam was born December 2, 1925, in Conway, S.C., the daughter of the late Thomas Boyd Ludlam and Ruth Spivey. She graduated from Coker College in Hartsville, S.C., in 1946 with a major in music.
She married Marvin McClam of Lake City, S.C., in 1947. They retired to North Litchfield Beach in 1984. In Raleigh, she was active in numerous groups within the Ridge Road Baptist Church. Over the years, she also maintained a close affiliation with her beloved Coker College.
In addition to her parents, a sister, Jean Ludlam, preceded her in death. She is survived by another sister, Ann Ludlam (Bob) Winfield of Conway; a daughter, Dr. Tricia McClam (Dr. Robert Greer) of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sons, Steve (Terry) McClam of Columbia, S.C., and Louis (Linda) McClam of Raleigh; three grandsons, Erin McClam of New York, Drew (Lori) McClam of Charleston, S.C., and Mark McClam of Raleigh; and a great-granddaughter, Delaney Reese McClam.
A memorial service conducted by Dr. Randy Sherron and Dr. L. Mack Thompson will be held Thursday, June 2nd, at Ridge Road Baptist Church in Raleigh at 11am. Afterward the family will receive family and friends in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Ridge Road Baptist Church, 2011 Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607. The family expresses deep gratitude to the staff of Amedisys Hospice of Garner and the many caregivers who were so attentive.
