Roy was born November 8, 1918 in Franklin County, NC to the late Joseph Lee Alford and Pattie Lois Wynne. He was predeceased by six siblings and his grandson, Lee Tudor.
In addition to his wife, Margaret Moss Alford, Roy is survived by his children, Nancy Reichenbach, of Mooresville, NC, Ann Althoff, of Atlanta, GA, and Carol Blue, of Raleigh; grandchildren, Jon Collins, Tracy Robbins, Carl “Tripp” Reichenbach, III, Ashley Gibbs, Curtis Collins; great grandchildren, Tony Collins, Cristina Collins, Lee Riley, Dillon Robbins, Nicole Gibbs, Cole Robbins, Dalton Gibbs, Carl “Chase” Reichenbach, IV; a brother, Eugene Alford; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
He served his country in World War II as a Machinist’s Mate Third Class from January 1944 to November 1945 on the USS Jobb DE 707. He and his shipmates reunited every year to reminisce and support each other.
On September 27, 1937, Roy married his sweetheart, Margaret Susan Moss. His most treasured roles were being her husband, a father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Roy was a dedicated employee of Electrical Equipment Co. for 41 years, ultimately becoming Shop Foreman. He was a firm but fair boss that mentored many young men.
As a founding member of Highland United Methodist Church, Roy served in a variety of roles from usher to treasurer. The church was always his spiritual guide. He was a member of the Wolf Pack Club for 25 years and attended every home football and basketball game. When the basketball team went to Greece, under Jimmy Valvano, Roy and Margaret, with their dearest friends, Harriett and Carl Reichenbach, went along to cheer for their hometown team.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Dr. Elizabeth Campbell of the NC Cancer Center, the staff on floor 500 east at Rex Hospital for their excellent care and compassion, and the staff of Wake County Hospice for helping Roy and his family on his final journey.
A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 2:30PM at Highland United Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607. Interment will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC 27612. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM at Highland United Methodist Church.
