Dr. Watson is the son of the late Harry Powell Watson and Mary Stone Watson of Baltimore, Maryland. He is survived by his wife, Norma Osborne Watson, his son David Osborne Watson and daughter-in-law Eva Raneen Watson, his daughter Jennifer Mary Watson, his daughter Juliana Marling Watson Dick and son-in-law J. Scott Dick. He also leaves behind 9 grandchildren—James, Jenna, Nathaniel, Julia, Mariana, Rollin, Ronnie, Jordan and Lincoln.
In addition, he is fondly remembered by his siblings Ruth Lancaster (Frank), Harry Powell Watson Jr.(Joan), Douglas John Watson (Patricia), Donald MacLachlan Watson (Karen), and Sara Lois Watson. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Robert Stone Watson (Linda).
Dr. Watson, a distinguished scholar and educator, earned a Doctor of Philosophy in American Studies from the University of Maryland (1975) and a Master of Arts in American Studies from the University of Maryland (1970). In 1992, he received an Honorary Doctor of Public Administration from Union College. His academic career included post-doctoral graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Kentucky. He served as President of Somerset Community College from 1989 to 1999. Prior to that, he held various roles at institutions including Hiwassee College, Birmingham Southern College and Union College. Dr. Watson's dedication to education and leadership left an indelible legacy of excellence for generations of students.
His accolades included citations for notable service from the University of Kentucky and the State Senate of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Dr. Watson remained active in professional associations, including the American Studies Association and the American Historical Association. He was involved in various community organizations, dedicating time to meaningful causes. He authored numerous books, and newspaper and journal articles.
Even in retirement, Dr. Watson continued to impact education through teaching, consulting and administrative work.
He was loved by all who knew him, a testament to the extraordinary impact he had on the hearts of those around him.
A funeral service for Dr. Watson was held on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home. Burial followed in Raleigh Memorial Park.
