Robert Todd Ramsay, 75, of Raleigh died on Tuesday March 29, 2016. He was born August 7, 1940 in Aberdeen, Washington a son of the late William Milton Ramsay and Marian Lovering Ramsay. He graduated from Monterey High School in Monterey, California in June of 1958 and attended the University of Washington, graduating Cum Laude in 1962. Bob received a PHD in Mathematics from the University of Miami in 1967, after which he came to Raleigh, North Carolina to begin a career in the Mathematic Department at North Carolina State University. He enjoyed teaching a variety of different courses and he loved coaching his students for the Putnam Competition from the early 1980’s.
Bob also ran the Wolfpack M 6 (Magnificent, Monthly, Mesmerizing, Money-making, Minatory, Mathematical) Problem Contest from 1989-2001. There were also numerous football pools offered through the years. When Bob became the Undergraduate Student Coordinator for the Math Department, he enjoyed working with the students as they reached graduation and beyond.
While teaching, he also enjoyed bicycle riding and being a member of the Road Scholars. They trained together daily and competed in races far and wide. Bob was proud to have been on the first Murphy to Manteo bike ride across the state.
A memorable moment for Bob was his encounter with Coach Holtz at football practice when he refused to leave the track, thought to be a spy, he was arrested and made news nationwide. This was Bob’s "fifteen minutes of fame”.
During his retirement, Bob indulged in his love for movies, music and cooking. He was known for his chili recipes.
Bob is survived by his wife of 28 years, Anne Sprinkle; sisters Mary Lynn, Diane, Carol and brother Bill, all from the Olympic Peninsula, Washington; stepdaughter, Darell Troxel [Shawn], step grandson Rogan; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
