Bob was a star athlete on the Clayton High School Basketball team, and set a still-standing North Carolina High School Athletic Association record by scoring 67 points in a single game. After graduating from Clayton High School in 1950, he went on to play for Furman University. It was there that he met his future wife Martha Babb.
After graduating from Furman, he served his country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army from 1954-56. Bob then studied at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and also graduated from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1961.
After being ordained into the ministry, he was called to be pastor of Pine Level Baptist Church. In 1965 Bob then accepted the offer from Corinth Baptist Church in Elizabeth City, and faithfully served there as a minister for 29 years. After retiring in 1994, he worked as interim pastor for a number of churches in the Raleigh area.
Bob deeply loved his family. He was definitely a people person, and never met a stranger. He enjoyed laughing, telling jokes and sharing stories with anyone he met. He officiated at countless weddings and funerals over his long career, and visited thousands of people in the hospital as pastor. He was an avid supporter of both Furman University and UNC-Chapel Hill athletics, and also had a passion for woodworking, traveling and fishing at the Outer Banks.
He is survived by Martha, his wife of 67 years, sister Katherine Joyner, daughters Kathy Etheridge (Walt), Karen Craig (Randy), sons Roy Poole (Becky) and Robert Poole Jr. (Deborah), as well as nine grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sister Dorothy Newton (William), brother Dayton Poole (Abbie Jean), and son David Poole (Lydia).
